Troubleshooting UNIX Newsgroup

Here are the solutions to some troubleshooting problems that users frequently encounter.

I am using Internet Explorer 4.x, and I cannot connect to the news server

Here are the instructions for getting into the newsgroup with IE4. You won't be able to merely click on the link on the webpage but will have to configure the news server connection manually in Outlook Express.

  • In the Outlook Express application, go to TOOLS, ACCOUNTS
  • Go to the NEWS tab, and click the ADD button
  • Click on NEWS
  • You will now be presented with the Internet Connection Wizard.
  • Fill in your name and click NEXT
  • Fill in your e-mail address and click NEXT
  • Fill in the News NNTP server as : 196.22.225.145
  • Tick where it says 'My news server requires me to logon' and click NEXT.
  • Select the option which says 'Log on using'. Under News Account Name, enter the username that was sent to you. Under Password, enter the password that was sent to you.
  • Leave 'Log on using Secure Password Authentication' blank
  • Click NEXT
  • Choose an account name e.g.. UNIX and click NEXT
  • Choose 'Connect using my phone line' and click NEXT
  • Choose the Dial-Up Networking connection that you use and click NEXT.
  • Click FINISH
  • Click CLOSE
  • Then click YES to download the newsgroup list
  • Click on the UNIX newsgroup
  • Click on 'Go To'

And Voila! You should be in.

The messages in the newsgroup should now come up, and you can post messages and articles to the group.

I am using Netscape Navigator 4.0 (or higher), and can't post to the newsgroups.

Please check to see that your Netscape browser is configured to post to newsgroups. Go to Edit, Preferences, Mail & Newsgroup, Add Server (196.22.225.145). Identity and fill in your necessary details.

I am using software other than Internet Explorer 4.01, Netscape Navigator 4.0 and can not connect to the newsgroups.

If you are not using any of the above browsers to access the UNIX newsgroup, please contact the software vendor that provided you with the package for support.
